Tetrapropylene

Tetrapropylene

Tetra-propylene is not a single, pure compound but rather a mixture of branched C12 mono-olefin isomers (a UVCB substance) obtained through the oligomerization of propylene using solid phosphoric acid or zeolite catalysts; it appears as a colorless to pale yellow, transparent liquid that is insoluble in water but soluble in alcohols, ethers, aromatic hydrocarbons, and high-boiling solvents.

Industrial source

Propylene undergoes oligomerization in a fixed-bed reactor using SPA (solid phosphoric acid) or ZSM-5/zeolite catalysts at 200–240°C and moderate pressure, yielding a mixed C9 (trimer) + C12 (tetramer) + C15 oligomer stream; the C12 narrow fraction-propylene tetramer-is subsequently isolated via vacuum fractionation. This process is often integrated with a nonene (propylene trimer) unit, with the tetramer serving as a byproduct or co-product of the trimerization unit.

Primary Uses

Tert-dodecyl mercaptan (TDM): Produced via the reaction of propylene tetramer with H₂S (catalyzed by acid clay or resin); serves as a key chain transfer agent/molecular weight regulator for SBR, ABS, and nitrile rubber polymerization-currently its most valuable application.
Dodecylphenol (DDP): Used to produce dodecylphenol polyoxyethylene ether (a non-ionic surfactant) and serves as a raw material for Antioxidant 264.
T746 Rust Inhibitor: Produced by the addition reaction with maleic anhydride to form dodecenyl succinic anhydride; used as a rust inhibitor in lubricants.
Branched-chain alkylbenzene (BAB): Tetrapropylene is used in industrial and metal cleaning agents (as a substitute for non-food-grade LAS).
Others: Tert-dodecylamine; isotridecyl alcohol/neotridecanoic acid (via oxo synthesis followed by hydrogenation); tetracosene (for further dimerization); alkyldiphenylether disulfonate (specialty surfactant for latex and textiles).

Safety, Storage, and Transportation

The acute toxicity of tetrapropylene is low to moderate (oral LD₅₀ in rats > 5 g/kg).; however, prolonged skin contact causes defatting and cracking, and it is significantly irritating to the eyes. GHS classifications: H315, H319, H304 (risk of aspiration pneumonia).
Flammable; flash point >70°C, yet still classified as a combustible liquid. Incompatible with strong oxidizers and peroxide initiators (due to reactivity of the olefinic bond).
Storage and transport: Store under nitrogen blanket or in full tanks, protected from light; add trace amounts of polymerization inhibitor (to prevent slight gelation during prolonged exposure to heat). Regulated as a Class 3 flammable liquid (Packing Group III).

FAQ

Q: Is it the same thing as "linear 1-dodecene"?

A: No, they are not the same. Tetrapropylene (PT) is a mixture of branched C12 olefins derived from propylene tetramerization; it biodegrades slowly and is used to produce branched ABS. 1-Dodecene (CAS 112-41-4) is a linear alpha-olefin derived from ethylene oligomerization; it is used to produce linear LAS (the mainstream choice for modern laundry detergents, as it is easily biodegradable). The two cannot be arbitrarily interchanged in an alkylbenzene production unit-branched products offer good low-temperature fluidity but are difficult to biodegrade, whereas linear products exhibit the opposite characteristics.

Q: Toxicity and Safety

A: It is a flammable liquid of low toxicity, but the following should be noted: It is irritating to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract; prolonged contact causes skin defatting and cracking (R66), and aspiration following ingestion can cause pneumonia (R65); It is not a primary substance on lists of known carcinogens, but it carries a high risk of static electricity accumulation (non-polar liquid); GHS classification: H226 (flammable), H315/H319 (skin/eye irritation), H336 (dizziness/drowsiness), H412 (long-term aquatic hazard); In China, it is regulated as a flammable liquid (UN 2850 or 3295, Packing Group III).

Q: Handling and Storage

A: Ensure explosion-proof ventilation, maintain low flow velocity, and use grounding for static electricity prevention; PPE: Chemical-resistant gloves (nitrile/neoprene), safety goggles, and half-face respirator (for hydrocarbon vapors); Store in a sealed, cool, well-ventilated, explosion-proof warehouse; keep away from strong oxidizers (e.g., nitric acid, peroxides); For spills, collect using sand/soil or absorbent pads; do not flush with water (to prevent spreading); dispose of as oily hazardous waste through a qualified facility.
