High-boiling Aromatic Hydrocarbon Solvents

High-boiling Aromatic Hydrocarbon Solvents

High-boiling aromatic solvents (Type 100/150) are C9–C10 narrow-boiling-range mixed aromatic solvents obtained through the precision fractionation of heavy aromatics from petroleum reforming. Neither is a single-component substance; rather, they are mixtures composed primarily of trimethylbenzenes (pseudocumene, mesitylene, and hemimellitene), ethyltoluenes, and small amounts of tetramethylbenzenes, with an aromatic content of ≥98%.

Key Performance Features

Strong solvency: Aniline point of 13–15°C and KB value of 95+; exhibits excellent solvency for epoxy, polyurethane, alkyd, acrylic, bitumen, rosin, and SBS/SIS hot-melt adhesives, maintaining solvency even during the late stages of evaporation → results in good coating leveling and no "orange peel" effect.
Controllable evaporation: Evaporation is much slower than that of "Three Benzenes" (benzene, toluene, xylene)-with the "No. 150" grade being particularly slow-making it suitable for ensuring smooth curing in baking enamels, coil coatings, and high-solids coatings.
Low impurity content: High-boiling aromatic hydrocarbon solvents are free from water, olefins, chlorine, and heavy metals; low sulfur content (refined grades <10 ppm); passes copper strip corrosion tests.
Lower toxicity than "Three Benzenes": Benzene-free; aromatic content consists primarily of C9+ fractions; acute inhalation toxicity is lower than that of benzene or toluene; however, as it remains an aromatic hydrocarbon, long-term exposure carries risks of hematopoietic or neurological toxicity, and it is subject to VOC regulations.

Primary Uses

Coatings/Inks: Industrial baking enamels, epoxy floor coating thinners, polyurethane waterproof coatings, marine paints, high-end printing inks (xylene substitute; offers slow drying and good leveling properties)
Resin Synthesis: Solvent for the polymerization of alkyd, saturated polyester, and polyimide resins
Pesticide Emulsifiable Concentrates (EC): Carrier solvent for EC formulations (dissolves active ingredients and emulsifiers; partial substitute for xylene)
Cleaning Agents: Degreasing and cleaning of precision machinery and electronic components (Grade 150 is particularly suitable for soak-cleaning heavy oil contamination due to its slow drying rate)
Others: Phosphoric acid extractant for hydrogen peroxide production, fuel additives, rubber plasticizers/softening agents

Safety, Storage, and Transportation

Flammable liquids (No. 100: closed-cup flash point ~42–47°C; No. 150: ~60–69°C); GHS classifications include H304 (aspiration hazard) and H315/H319 (skin and eye irritation). Store and transport as Class 3 dangerous goods; assign UN numbers based on specific flash points (commonly UN 3082 or UN 1866).
Handling: Ensure good ventilation and anti-static measures; wear chemical-resistant gloves and safety goggles; keep away from strong oxidizers.
Environmental: High-boiling aromatic hydrocarbon solvents are classified as volatile organic compounds (VOCs);emissions from coating applications require treatment via RTO or activated carbon. Certain low-naphthalene grades (e.g., S-150ND) contain <0.05% naphthalene and are used in high-end coatings.

FAQ

Q: Key Points for Handling and Storage

A: Ensure explosion-proof ventilation; control flow velocity and use grounding to prevent static electricity (conductivity is typically <100 pS/m, making charge accumulation highly likely); PPE: Antistatic workwear, oil-resistant nitrile or neoprene gloves, and safety goggles; use a half-face respirator if necessary; Store in a cool, well-ventilated warehouse (≤30°C) away from oxidizing agents (e.g., nitric acid, peroxides); must be stored separately from strong oxidizers; For spills, absorb with sand, diatomaceous earth, or sawdust; do not flush with water (as this causes spreading); dispose of via qualified incineration services as HW06/HW49 oily hazardous waste; Extinguish fires using CO₂, dry chemical powder, or alcohol-resistant foam; do not use a direct water stream (the substance is water-insoluble and splashing may occur).

Q: List of Procurement Documents

A: COA (aromatics content ≥98%, distillation range, flash point, density, benzene content, sulfur content), Chinese SDS (including UN 3082 or 3261, etc., determined by the specific grade's flash point), and qualifications for the trading/transport of hazardous chemicals; for bulk procurement, it is recommended to specify an upper limit for naphthalene content (standard grade ≤1%; low-naphthalene grade ND ≤0.05%).
