Traditional route: Propylene undergoes oligomerization in a fixed-bed reactor using a solid phosphoric acid (SPA) catalyst at 180–240°C and 4–5 MPa; the product is processed via depropanization and multi-column fractionation to isolate the "tetramer fraction."
Modern route: Low-temperature oligomerization using nickel-based or zeolite (e.g., ZSM-23) catalysts, allowing for tunable branching and selectivity.
It can also be isolated from the C10–C14 fraction of paraffin cracking, but the predominant production method is propylene oligomerization.
