Fast-drying solvent: Used in coatings, inks, and adhesives as a substitute for acetone or ethyl acetate; characterized by rapid evaporation, low odor, and relatively low VOC content (though still classified as a VOC).

Esterification of methanol and acetic acid (traditional): Catalyzed by concentrated sulfuric acid; however, high energy consumption arises due to the low boiling points of the products and the formation of multiple azeotropes.
Carbonylation route: Methanol + acetic acid + hydrogen (as a byproduct of the acetic anhydride route) or direct methanol carbonylation (derived from the BP/Chiyoda process).
Byproduct of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) production: Methyl acetate is a major byproduct when PVA is produced via methanol transesterification; available in large quantities at low cost, it is typically cracked back into acetic acid and methanol for recycling.

General properties of esters: Hydrolysis catalyzed by acids or bases yields acetic acid and methanol (since methanol has a low boiling point, the equilibrium shifts readily to the right; industrial recovery often employs catalytic distillation).
Ammonolysis: Reacts with NH₃ to form acetamide and methanol.
Claisen condensation: Under strong base catalysis, it undergoes self-condensation to yield methyl acetoacetate (though its reactivity is lower than that of ethyl acetate; interestingly, despite the methyl group offering less steric hindrance, it is less prone to enolate formation than the ethyl ester? In practice, methyl acetate can be used, but the ethyl ester is more common industrially).
Stability: Stable at room temperature; store in sealed containers away from moisture; undergoes hydrolysis when exposed to strong acids or bases at elevated temperatures.

Acute toxicity: Low toxicity; oral LD₅₀ in rats ≈ 3700 mg/kg. However, high-concentration vapors have strong anesthetic effects, causing dizziness, nausea, and mucous membrane irritation.
Eyes/Skin: Liquid irritates eyes; vapors irritate the respiratory tract; prolonged contact causes skin dryness.
Flammability/Explosion: Explosive limits 3.1%–16% (v/v); vapors are heavier than air and spread along the ground.
Protection: Explosion-proof ventilation, organic vapor cartridges, nitrile gloves; cover spills with foam or sand/soil-do not flush away with water (although soluble in water, it evaporates extremely rapidly).
Storage/Transport: UN 1231, Class 3, PG II; store under nitrogen blanket or in full tanks; keep away from alkalis, acids, and oxidizing agents.
