Diethyl succinate is a colorless, transparent liquid with a very faint, slightly sweet, ester-like odor; it is the most commonly used and readily available inert diester of succinic acid with a medium-to-high boiling point. It is sparingly soluble in water but miscible with ethanol, diethyl ether, acetone, ethyl acetate, benzene, and chloroform; it dissolves nitrocellulose and certain resins.
