Cyclopentane

Cyclopentane is a colorless, transparent, and highly mobile liquid that is insoluble in water but miscible with ethanol, diethyl ether, acetone, hydrocarbons, and most organic solvents; it dissolves fats, oils, rubber, and certain resins. It possesses a mild, hydrocarbon-like odor resembling gasoline and is the simplest saturated five-membered cycloalkane. It can undergo ring-opening oxidation to form products such as glutaric acid in the presence of strong oxidizing agents, and can undergo catalytic ring-opening at high temperatures to yield low-carbon olefins.

Primary Uses

Blowing agent: Cyclopentane is a substitute for HCFC-141b in rigid polyurethane foam (for refrigerators and freezers); still widely used today.
Solvent: Solvent for rubber, oils, fats, waxes, and resins (low-to-medium polarity).
Organic synthesis: Production of cyclopentanone, glutaric acid, and intermediates for pharmaceuticals and pesticides.
Refrigerant component: Early research focused on alternatives to the R-500 series; now largely replaced by isobutane/cyclopentane blends.

Safety and Physiology

Toxicity: Cyclopentane is low toxicity but strongly anesthetic. Oral LD₅₀ in rats ≈ 3.5 g/kg; high vapor concentrations cause dizziness, nausea, and confusion; liquid form causes skin irritation due to defatting.

Storage and Transport: UN 1146, Class 3, PG I; store in an explosion-proof facility (≤25°C), keep away from ignition sources, ensure anti-static grounding, and strictly prohibit mixed storage with oxidizing agents.
