Butyl acetate appears as a colorless, transparent liquid with a characteristic fruity aroma reminiscent of pears and bananas (it is a primary source of the typical "paint smell"). It is miscible with ethanol, diethyl ether, acetone, and aromatic hydrocarbons, and exhibits excellent solvency for nitrocellulose, acrylic resins, polyurethanes, alkyd resins, epoxy resins, and chlorinated rubber.

Primary Uses

"King of coating solvents": Butyl acetate is used in automotive OEM and refinish coatings, nitrocellulose wood lacquers, coil coatings, and inks; adjusts late-stage leveling and prevents orange-peel effects; often formulated with aromatic hydrocarbons (S-100), PMA, and glycol ether esters.
Nitrocellulose (NC) lacquers: A classic, highly effective solvent; the single ester used in the largest volumes.
Adhesives: Solvent for polyurethane and chloroprene adhesives.
Fragrances: Used in trace amounts for fruity-scented fragrances (though primarily an industrial chemical rather than a fragrance ingredient).
Extraction: Extraction of antibiotics and fragrances (less common; ethyl acetate or isopropyl acetate are more frequently used).
Electronics: Component in certain cleaning agents (slow-drying grades).

Acute toxicity:Butyl acetate is classified as having low toxicity.; oral LD₅₀ in rats ≈ 10,768 mg/kg; high vapor concentrations cause eye and nasal irritation, headache, and drowsiness.
