Dimethyl Maleate

Dimethyl maleate appears as a colorless, transparent, oily liquid with a faint ester-like odor; it is sparingly soluble in water but miscible with various organic solvents such as alcohols and aromatic hydrocarbons. Primary Uses

Resin comonomers: Copolymerization of dimethyl maleate with vinyl chloride, acrylates, styrene, etc., to enhance resin flexibility, adhesion, and weather resistance; used for modifying PVC, acrylic resins, and water-based coating emulsions.
Fine chemical intermediates: Used in the synthesis of organophosphorus insecticides (e.g., malathion), fungicides, active pharmaceutical ingredients, and plasticizers.
Industrial additives and solvents: Used as preservatives for fatty oils, metal rust inhibitors, and leather treatment agents, as well as reactive diluents and leveling agents in coatings and inks.

Safety and Toxicology

Toxicity: Oral LD₅₀ in rats is approximately 1410 mg/kg. Harmful if swallowed; causes serious eye and respiratory tract irritation and may cause allergic skin reactions.
Long-term hazards: Prolonged or repeated exposure to dimethyl maleate may damage organs such as the respiratory system.
Protection requirements: Ensure enclosed ventilation during handling; wear a gas mask, chemical safety goggles, and oil-resistant rubber gloves; keep away from sources of ignition and heat; avoid contact with oxidizing agents, reducing agents, acids, and bases.
