Butyl propionate is a colorless, transparent liquid with a mild fruity aroma (resembling pineapple or pear skin). It is a medium-to-high boiling point solvent widely used in industry among propionate esters. It is miscible with ethanol, diethyl ether, acetone, ethyl acetate, hydrocarbons, and most resins; it possesses excellent dissolving power for nitrocellulose, vinyl chloride copolymers, and acrylic resins, and is stable under light and heat (though it should be kept away from strong acids and strong bases).

Primary Uses

Fragrances/Flavors: Used in formulating fruity notes (pineapple, pear, tropical fruit); suitable for use in small quantities in both personal care products and food flavorings (FEMA 2211).
Organic synthesis intermediate: Used to produce butanol derivatives, specialty plasticizers, and side chains for pharmaceuticals and pesticides.
Extractant: Used for separating aromatic essential oils and extracting certain antibiotics.
