Industrial Sulfur

Industrial Sulfur

Industrial sulfur refers to non-food-grade elemental sulfur that meets industrial purity requirements. It appears as pale yellow to yellow brittle crystals, lumps, flakes, granules, or powder with a faint characteristic odor. It is primarily used in sulfuric acid production, the rubber industry, and chemical and material manufacturing. It is strictly prohibited for use in food, pharmaceuticals, or any applications involving direct human contact.

Main uses

Sulfuric acid production (largest proportion, approximately 50%+): Incineration yields SO₂ → catalytic oxidation → absorption to H₂SO₄, further processed into phosphate fertilizers (diammonium phosphate, superphosphate), titanium dioxide, hydrofluoric acid, etc.

Rubber vulcanizing agents: Powdered sulfur/insoluble sulfur is used for tire and hose crosslinking.

Carbon disulfide and sulfites: CS₂ is produced from sulfur + methane and used in viscose fibers; sodium sulfite is used for paper bleaching.

Pesticides and dyes: Sulfur dyes, lime sulfur mixture, certain organosulfur fungicides.

Fireworks, gunpowder, matches (historically a major product, now a declining proportion).

Building materials: Sulfur mortar, sulfur concrete (acid-resistant flooring).

Reprocessed specialty sulfur: Food-grade sulfur (bleaching and fumigation), insoluble sulfur (radial tires), colloidal sulfur (pesticide suspensions).

Hazardous properties and safe storage and transportation

Classification: UN 1350, Class 4.1 Flammable solids, Packing Group III; GHS H228 (Flammable solids) + H315/H319 (Irritating)

Ignition and Explosion: The auto-ignition temperature of industrial sulfur is 232°C, and its lower explosive limit for dust is approximately 2.3 g/m³. Fires can be extinguished using dry powder, water mist, or dry sand; avoid direct water jets (to prevent splashing and the scattering of molten sulfur). The combustion product, SO₂, is toxic.

Static Electricity: Dry sulfur powder is prone to carrying several kV of static electricity during transport, requiring full grounding and explosion-proof electrical equipment.

Incompatible Materials: Strong oxidizers (chlorates, nitrates, peroxides), strong alkalis (exothermic formation of polysulfides), metal powders.

Storage: Lump or granular industrial sulfur may be stored outdoors (on raised platforms to prevent moisture), whereas powdered or flake products must be stored in a warehouse; store separately from oxidizing agents and avoid exposure to open flames or direct sunlight.

Protection: Wear a mask (to prevent rhinitis and laryngitis), goggles, and oil-resistant gloves when handling dust; ensure workshop ventilation.

FAQ

Q: Toxicity and Occupational Health

A:Elemental sulfur itself: No specific OEL (Occupational Exposure Limit) is established by ACGIH, OSHA, or NIOSH for elemental sulfur; it is considered to have low toxicity, with an oral LD₅₀ >5000 mg/kg.

There are two primary risks:

Dust irritation: Irritation to eyes and the respiratory tract, chronic bronchitis, and dermatitis (ICSC 1166).

Associated H₂S: Undegassed sulfur contains 250–300 ppmw of H₂S, which is released during handling or storage; H₂S limits are ACGIH TWA 1 ppm / STEL 5 ppm and NIOSH Ceiling 10 ppm; concentrations >100 ppm cause olfactory paralysis, and >500 ppm can cause sudden death.

Combustion or heating produces SO₂ (OSHA PEL 5 ppm), SO₃, and H₂S; these are the substances actually subject to occupational exposure limits.

GHS: Warning; H228 (Flammable solid) + H315 (Skin irritation) + H319 (Eye irritation) + H335 (Respiratory irritation) + H401 (Aquatic toxicity).

Q: Key Points for Handling and Storage

A: Four key safety measures: moisture control, fire prevention, dust control, and prevention of H₂S accumulation:

Store in a dry, cool, and well-ventilated warehouse; keep away from open flames, heat sources, and strong oxidizers (chlorates, nitrates, permanganates, halogens, phosphorus);

For powder handling: use explosion-proof electrical equipment, ensure anti-static grounding, employ enclosed conveying systems, and use wet methods for dust suppression;

Open-air storage is permissible, but windbreaks are required to prevent dust dispersal;

For confined spaces (sulfur pits, tanker compartments, storage tank vapor spaces): mandatory pre-entry ventilation, portable H₂S/SO₂ detectors, and SCBA;

PPE: Dust masks (P2/N100), safety goggles, rubber/PVC gloves, and work uniforms; for contact with molten sulfur, add heat-insulating/flame-retardant suits and insulating gloves;

Leakage: Use wet dust suppression before sweeping into containers; do not use dry air blowing; for large spills, cover with plastic sheeting to minimize dispersal;

Firefighting: Use water mist for cooling, dry chemical powder, dry sand, or CO₂; do not use high-pressure water jets on powder piles (risk of dust explosion); wear SCBA (protection against SO₂/H₂S) at the fire scene.
