Polystyrene-535

Polystyrene-535

PS 535 is typically supplied as colorless, transparent pellets, offering excellent light transmittance, rigidity, and heat resistance. It is widely used in injection molding and extrusion processes. However, GPPS grades are inherently brittle and prone to cracking, with relatively low impact strength. They also perform poorly in boiling water and are not recommended for extreme service conditions involving high temperatures or heavy mechanical loads.

Advantages and disadvantages analysis

Core advantages:Polystyrene has low raw material costs; it exhibits good melt flow, making it easy to process via injection molding and extrusion; and it possesses excellent dielectric properties and extremely low water absorption.

Main limitations: Ordinary GPPS is brittle and not impact-resistant; low continuous use temperature, easily softens and deforms when exposed to boiling water; poor weather resistance, prone to yellowing and aging when exposed to sunlight for a long time; easily soluble in many organic solvents such as benzene, toluene, and acetone.

Production process

Industrially, polystyrene is mainly produced using two main methods: bulk polymerization and suspension polymerization.

Bulk polymerization: Currently the most important production process (accounting for over 85% of total production). In a solvent-free environment, styrene monomers are used as the medium, with an initiator added and gradually heated for continuous polymerization. This process produces products with high purity and good transparency, and requires no complex post-processing.

Suspension polymerization: Using water as the dispersion medium, styrene monomers are broken into tiny droplets through mechanical stirring and the action of a dispersant for polymerization. This method has high heat transfer efficiency, a mild and easily controllable reaction, and is mainly used for the production of expandable polystyrene (EPS) beads.

FAQ

Q: Toxicity and Occupational Health

A:Standard finished products are essentially non-toxic: acute oral LD₅₀ >5000 mg/kg; causes only mild skin/eye irritation; IARC classifies PS itself as a Group 3 carcinogen (inadequate evidence).

The real risk arises during high-temperature processing:

Thermal decomposition at >270°C yields styrene monomer (IARC Group 2B, a possible human carcinogen), benzaldehyde, styrene oxide, and acetophenone, among others.

Combustion products are more complex: acrolein, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), dioxins, and CO; dioxin levels decrease significantly only at temperatures above 800°C.

Occupational exposure limits for styrene: ACGIH TWA 50 ppm; OSHA PEL 100 ppm.

Food contact safety: Approved by FDA/EFSA for normal use; FDA limits styrene migration to 0.1 mg/L, whereas actual levels in commercial products are about 10,000 times lower. Avoid microwave heating and contact with hot oil or high-fat foods (which increases the leaching of the fat-soluble monomer).

Q: Key Points for Handling and Storage

A: Explosion-proof ventilation in the processing workshop: Local exhaust ventilation is mandatory at injection molding, extrusion, and hot-cutting stations to prevent the accumulation of styrene vapors.

Dust explosion protection: EPS sanding and sawing generate combustible dust; implement measures per GB 15577, including explosion-proof electrical equipment, grounding, and wet dust suppression.

PPE: Standard operations require nitrile gloves and safety goggles; hot processing requires a half-face respirator (with organic vapor cartridges).

Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from strong oxidizers and open flames; avoid direct sunlight (UV exposure causes yellowing and embrittlement).

Fire extinguishing: Use dry powder, CO₂, or water mist; do not use a direct water jet on EPS stacks (risk of dust dispersion and stack collapse); wear SCBA during firefighting (protection against styrene and CO).
