Acrylonitrile is a colorless, transparent, volatile toxic liquid with a distinctive pungent odor reminiscent of bitter almonds or garlic. Its molecular structure features two highly reactive functional groups—the carbon-carbon double bond and the cyano group—endowing it with extreme chemical reactivity, earning it the title of "the gold standard of petrochemicals." It is primarily used in the production of synthetic resins, synthetic fibers, synthetic rubber, and fine chemicals.

Physicochemical properties

Physical parameters: Acrylonitrile has a melting point of -83.6°C, a boiling point of 77.3°C, and a density of 0.806 g/cm³ (at 20°C). It is slightly soluble in water and readily soluble in most organic solvents.

Flammable and explosive: Flash point -1℃ (closed cup), extremely flammable. The explosion limits of the vapor mixed with air are 3.0%–17.0%.

Highly reactive: Easily undergoes free radical polymerization upon contact with light, heat, or initiators; reacts violently with oxidants, strong acids, strong bases, and amines.

Safety and toxicity protection

Highly toxic and carcinogenic: Acrylonitrile is classified as a highly toxic substance., it can be absorbed through the respiratory tract and skin. It releases cyanide ions in the body, blocking cellular respiration; the IARC classifies it as a Group 2B suspected carcinogen.

First aid measures: For skin contact, immediately remove clothing and rinse with plenty of water; for inhalation poisoning, move to fresh air and immediately administer amyl nitrite inhalation as an antidote, then seek immediate medical attention.

Storage and transportation requirements: Store in a cool, well-ventilated warehouse, strictly adhering to the "two-person receiving and two-person storage" system. It must be stabilized with a polymerization inhibitor and nitrogen-sealed; it must not be stored with oxidizers, acids, or alkalis.
