Phosphorus Pentasulfide (P₂S₅, CAS 1314-80-3) is a yellow to yellowish-grey crystalline powder or lump with a strong odor of hydrogen sulfide. It melts at 276–280 °C and decomposes around 514 °C. Highly reactive with moisture, it hydrolyzes violently to release toxic H₂S gas and phosphoric acid. P₂S₅ is a key raw material for manufacturing lubricant additives (such as ZDDP), pesticide intermediates (organophosphorus insecticides), rubber accelerators, and mineral flotation agents. It must be stored in tightly sealed, moisture-proof containers away from water, acids, and oxidizers.

Reaction with alcohols (methanol, ethanol, butanol, etc.) to produce dialkyl dithiophosphate:
P₄S₁₀ + 4ROH → 2(RO)₂P(S)SH + 2H₂S Further chlorination yields dithiophosphate chloride, which is then used to synthesize dimethoate, malathion, phorate, phoxim, fenitrothion, diazinon, etc. This is the common starting point for sulfur-containing organophosphorus insecticides.

Lubricating oil additives:
Neutralization of dithiophosphate with ZnO yields ZDDP (zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate), a primary extreme pressure anti-wear agent and antioxidant in engine oils.
