Methanesulfonic Acid

Methanesulfonic acid is a transparent liquid ranging from colorless to pale yellow (high-purity grades are nearly colorless) and lacks a volatile, pungent odor (unlike hydrochloric acid, which fumes, or p-toluenesulfonic acid, which has a benzene-like smell). It is the only commonly used liquid strong alkyl sulfonic acid; combining strong acidity with low oxidizing power, it is classified industrially as a "strong organic acid" or "green acid catalyst."

Basic physical properties

Appearance: Pure product is a colorless, transparent oily liquid; industrial grade is pale yellow. Does not crystallize; remains liquid down to -20°C.
Boiling point: 167°C at 1.3 kPa (10 mmHg); begins to decompose at approximately 200°C under atmospheric pressure (no distinct atmospheric boiling point).
Melting point: -19°C.
Density: 1.481 g/cm³ (20°C); denser than water.
Refractive index: n²⁰ᴅ ≈ 1.431.
Solubility: Completely miscible with water, ethanol, diethyl ether, DMF, and DMSO; insoluble in hydrocarbons; aqueous solution is strongly acidic.
pKa: Approximately -1.9 (in water); acidity comparable to hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid (slightly weaker than the first dissociation of H₂SO₄) and far stronger than carboxylic acids or phenols.
Conductivity: Aqueous solution has high conductivity; can serve as the acidic component in electroplating baths.
Non-flammable, but decomposes at high temperatures to release SO₂/SO₃ fumes.

Chemical properties

Esterification/Condensation Catalysts: Biodiesel (replaces H₂SO₄; easy to separate, no carbonization), polyesters, fragrance esterification
Electroplating/Electrolysis: Acid component in plating baths for tin, lead, copper, and nickel (tin methanesulfonate yields dense coatings; industry standard for PCBs)
Pharmaceutical/Agrochemical Synthesis: MsCl intermediate, carbohydrate chemistry (glycosylation), acid aid for peptide coupling
Batteries/Capacitors: Electrolyte component for supercapacitors (high conductivity, wide liquid temperature range)
Cleaning Agents: Metal pickling (replaces hydrochloric acid to reduce hydrogen embrittlement and chloride ion contamination)

Safety and Physiology

Toxicity: Low toxicity but corrosive. Oral LD₅₀ (rat) ≈ 1.6 g/kg; dermal LD₅₀ (rabbit) ≈ 620 mg/kg.
Corrosivity: Causes severe skin and eye corrosion (H314); eye contact may result in permanent damage; inhalation of mist causes respiratory tract edema.
GHS: Danger; H290 (May be corrosive to metals), H314 (Causes severe skin burns and eye damage), H335 (May cause respiratory irritation).
Storage and Transport: UN 3265 (Corrosive liquid, acidic, n.o.s., PG II); store in plastic drums (PE/PP) or plastic-lined steel drums; do not store with alkalis, oxidizing agents, or reactive metal powders; store at room temperature in a well-ventilated area.
