Propyl Propionate

Propyl propionate is a colorless, transparent liquid with a mild, fruity aroma (reminiscent of pineapple or sweet pear skin). It is miscible with ethanol, diethyl ether, acetone, ethyl acetate, hydrocarbons, and most resins. It exhibits excellent solvency for nitrocellulose, acrylic resins, and vinyl resins, has a moderately fast evaporation rate, and is stable under light and heat, though it should be kept away from strong acids and strong bases.

Primary Uses

Medium-boiling solvent: Used in coatings, inks, and adhesives; particularly suitable for systems requiring a slightly slower drying rate and better leveling than propyl acetate.
Fragrances/Flavors: Used in formulating fruit-like notes (pineapple, pear, apple jam); food-grade flavoring (FEMA 2958); used in very small quantities.
Organic synthesis intermediate: Used to produce propanol derivatives, specialty esters, and side chains for pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals.
Extractant: Used for fragrance essential oils and in the separation of certain fine chemicals.
