Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) is a critically important bulk chemical in the modern petrochemical industry, renowned for its exceptionally high octane rating and unique solvent properties. It appears as a colorless, transparent, and volatile liquid with a distinctive odor resembling terpenes or camphor. While sparingly soluble in water (approximately 4.3 g/L), it is completely miscible with organic solvents such as ethanol, diethyl ether, and hydrocarbons. Although chemically stable at room temperature, it readily undergoes hydrolysis in the presence of strong acids or bases to yield tert-butyl alcohol and methanol.

Primary Uses

Gasoline Additive (Core Application)
Over 90% of global Methyl Tert-butyl Ether production is used as a high-octane gasoline anti-knock agent. It boasts a Research Octane Number (RON) of up to 118 and an oxygen content of 18.2%. When blended into gasoline, it significantly enhances anti-knock performance and promotes complete fuel combustion, thereby reducing tailpipe emissions of carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons.
Chemical Raw Material
Leveraging its reversible synthesis characteristics, MTBE undergoes cracking in the presence of an acidic catalyst; this is the preferred process for producing high-purity, polymer-grade isobutylene (≥99.9%). Isobutylene is subsequently used to manufacture high-end products such as butyl rubber, polyisobutylene, and methyl methacrylate (MMA).
Fine Chemical and Pharmaceutical Solvent
High-purity MTBE features moderate polarity and high chemical inertness, and-unlike diethyl ether-it does not readily form explosive peroxides. It is widely used as a solvent for liquid-liquid extraction (e.g., extracting vegetable oils and separating antibiotics), as a mobile phase in chromatography, and as a quick-drying cleaning agent for precision electronic components.

Safety and Environmental Controversies

Health Hazards: Inhalation of high concentrations of vapor can cause headaches, nausea, dizziness, and respiratory tract irritation; prolonged exposure may lead to defatting dermatitis. The US EPA classifies it as a possible human carcinogen (Group 2B).
Groundwater Contamination: Due to its high water solubility and extreme resistance to biodegradation in the environment, leaks from underground storage tanks can easily lead to MTBE seepage and rapid groundwater contamination. Even concentrations as low as the ppb level can produce a severe, foul odor, and remediation costs are extremely high.
Regulatory Status: Due to environmental concerns, Methyl Tert-butyl Ether has been banned as a gasoline additive in California and other regions, though it remains widely used in areas such as Asia and the Middle East.
