Physicochemical properties

Physical parameters: Melting point -114.1℃, boiling point 78.3℃, density 0.79 g/cm³ (20℃), flash point 13℃ (closed cup).

Solubility: Miscible with water in any proportion and miscible with most organic solvents such as methanol, ether, and acetone.

Azeotropic properties: Forms a binary azeotrope with water, with an azeotropic point of 78.15℃, at which point the ethanol content is 95.6% and the water content is 4.4%.

Chemical behavior: As a typical primary alcohol, it can undergo oxidation to produce acetaldehyde and acetic acid, react with sodium to release hydrogen gas, and undergo dehydration under concentrated sulfuric acid catalysis to produce ethylene or ether.

Core Uses

Disinfection and sterilization: A 70%–75% ethanol aqueous solution can effectively destroy the protein structure of bacteria and viruses, making it the most commonly used skin and instrument surface disinfectant in medical and daily life.

Energy fuel: It can be used as a clean and renewable energy source. When blended with gasoline in a certain proportion (such as E10) to produce ethanol gasoline, it can effectively reduce carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions from vehicle exhaust.

Industrial solvent: Widely used in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, paint, and ink industries, it can dissolve a variety of polar and non-polar substances and is also an excellent solvent for extracting natural plant essential oils.

Chemical raw material: Used in the manufacture of various basic organic chemical products such as acetaldehyde, acetic acid, diethyl ether, and ethyl acetate.

Safety and toxicity protection

Fire and Explosion Hazards: Ethanol is highly flammable; its vapor is heavier than air and can spread to distant locations at lower levels, where it can ignite upon contact with an ignition source. The explosive limits in air are 3.3%~19.0%. Large-area spraying is strictly prohibited for indoor disinfection; good ventilation must be maintained and the area must be kept away from open flames.

Health Hazards: Moderately toxic. Acute poisoning manifests as initial excitation followed by depression of the central nervous system; severe cases can lead to death from respiratory paralysis. Long-term excessive exposure can cause fatty liver, chronic gastritis, cirrhosis, and other diseases.

Fire Extinguishing Methods: Use alcohol-resistant foam, dry powder, carbon dioxide, or dry sand to extinguish the fire. Water is ineffective.
