Basic physical properties

CAS: 554-12-1
Boiling point: 79.7°C (almost identical to that of ethyl acetate)
Melting point: -87.5°C
Density: 0.915 g/cm³ (20°C)
Refractive index: n²⁰ᴅ ≈ 1.377
Solubility: Slightly soluble in water (approx. 6 g/100 mL at 20°C); miscible with ethanol, diethyl ether, acetone, and ethyl acetate; dissolves nitrocellulose and certain acrylic/vinyl resins
Flash point: -2°C (closed cup, CC); some literature cites 6°C (due to open-cup method differences); highly flammable liquid (GHS Category 2)
Vapor pressure: Approx. 11.35 kPa at 25°C; evaporation rate comparable to that of ethyl acetate
Explosion limits: 2.5%–13.0% v/v

Primary Uses

Fast-drying solvent: Nitrocellulose lacquers, coatings, printing inks, and adhesives (evaporation rate similar to ethyl acetate; suitable as a substitute or for blending).
Fragrances/Food flavorings: FEMA GRAS 2752; imparts apple, pineapple, and rum notes; used in soft drinks, confectionery, and baked goods (dosage in the mg/kg range).
Organic synthesis intermediate: Production of MMA; intermediate for pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals; chromatographic reference standard.
Green solvent research: Derivative of bio-based propionic acid-based processes.

Safety and Physiology

Toxicity: Low toxicity. Oral LD₅₀: ~5000 mg/kg (rat), 3460 mg/kg (mouse); dermal LD₅₀: >5000 mg/kg (rabbit); inhalation LC₅₀: 27,000 mg/m³ (mouse). High vapor concentrations cause dizziness, nausea, and mucous membrane irritation; liquid contact causes moderate eye irritation.
GHS Signal Word: Danger (H225: Highly flammable liquid and vapor; H319: Causes serious eye irritation; H332: Harmful if inhaled).
Storage and Transport: UN 1248, Class 3, PG II; store in a cool, explosion-proof warehouse (≤30°C) separate from oxidizing agents and strong acids/bases; ensure anti-static grounding.
