Ethyl acetate, commonly known as acetic ether, is a colorless, transparent liquid with a fresh, fruity aroma (resembling pears or glue); it is one of the most widely used low-molecular-weight fatty acid esters in industry. It is a highly flammable liquid whose vapors can form explosive mixtures with air; it is stable to light but decomposes readily when exposed to strong acids, strong bases, or heat, and it does not easily undergo spontaneous polymerization.

Primary Uses

Food/Flavorings: Permitted food flavoring (fruity notes); however, industrial-grade material must not be used directly in food
Electronics cleaning: Substitute for halogenated hydrocarbons in certain precision cleaning applications (note: low flash point requires explosion-proof measures)

Safety and Physiology

Toxicity: Low toxicity. Oral LD₅₀ (rat) ≈ 5.6 g/kg; high-concentration vapors cause mucous membrane irritation, dizziness, and nausea; prolonged inhalation leads to mild anesthesia; liquid contact causes eye irritation.
Skin: Degreasing effect; repeated contact causes dryness.
Storage and Transport: Fire safety is critical-store at ≤ 30°C; use explosion-proof electrical equipment; store separately from oxidizing agents, acids, and alkalis; ensure anti-static grounding for drummed containers.
